STATION AREAS

Station areas bring together a multitude of spatial, infrastructural and mobility challenges. VELD is drawn to this complexity and has developed a portfolio of masterplans in which the often-diverging needs and ambitions of actors such as NMBS, Infrabel, AWV and local authorities need to be brought together.

Our methodology of negotiated urbanism and research by design helps translate these different interests into coherent and concrete masterplans. Clear roadmaps define how transformations can be realised, who takes responsibility for each part of the process and how a shared vision can be implemented step by step, from short-term quick wins to complex long-term transformations.

Landscape is often an important underlying structure in this process. It can guide the reorganisation of station areas, improve public space and support their ecological transition, transforming the station from a barrier into a connecting node. At the same time, we explore development potential around stations, allowing them to evolve from mobility hubs into vibrant, mixed neighbourhoods that remain active throughout the day.
