SUSTAINABLE TRANSITION
Responding to climate change means considering how each project can contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable future. Across different scales, VELD explores how questions of water, landscape, ecology, mobility and development can be brought together within an integrated spatial approach.
The masterplan for the GlaxoSmithKline Research & Development site in Rixensart and the transformation of the village centre of Sint-Katherina-Lombeek focus specifically on water and open space. Both create more space for water while connecting it to green spaces, ecological corridors and public spaces that provide cooler and more comfortable environments.
Projects such as Groene Parkenstad in Lommel connect the development of a soft-mobility network with the protection of open spaces in the rapidly developing surroundings of the city centre. The masterplans for the centre of Groot-Bijgaarden, Sportpark Poperinge and Kortrijk similarly explore how green and open spaces can be maximised while maintaining room for future development.
